Word Choice:

    1. Camus uses simple words over elegant and refined words because in order to describe Meursault and what he is thinking and doing Camus must use simple words.

    2. Camus mentions Maman funeral throughout the story because Meursault feels guilty about not feeling emotions for her, so he continues to bring up his mother so that he doesn't feel as badly.

    5.Camus conveys Mersault's thoughts as musing and often trivial to emphasize his indifference to emotion and to things that happen around him.

    6.Camus creates Mersault's character to be original in order to make the other characters' roles as foils more effective. Mersault's lack of feeling compared to other characters' strong emotions allows Mersault's character to stand out as one who does not display a lot of emotion.

    7.Camus uses Mersault's repeated mention of Maman's funeral as a way to show how Mersault's initial indifference to it changes throughout the story.
